Dimitar Tsotsorkov is the first Bulgarian awarded for his contribution to sustainable development by the UN Global Compact in New York
Dimitar Tsotsorkov, Chairperson of the Supervisory Board of Asarel-Medet, is the first Bulgarian among the ten business leaders awarded as pioneers under the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals. He reached the final round of the global competition having being awarded as a SDG Pioneer (Sustainable Development Goals) at the national competition held by the UN Global Compact Network Bulgaria in March this year.
The ten world business leaders for 2022 were announced during the UN Global Compact Leader Summit in New York on June 2. They were nominated among national winners by a jury including representatives of civil society, academia, the UN Global Compact, the UN administration and previous SDG Pioneers winners, the international organization announced.
As a representative of Bulgaria, Dimitar Tsotsorkov was awarded in the category of digital transformation for the contribution that innovative solutions bring to achieving the sustainable development goals in industry and the impact that the technology progress exercises on society’s prosperity. The global award has been bestowed every year since 2016 and this is the first manager of a mining company in the world who has won the prestigious award so far.
"I would like to thank the entire team of Asarel-Medet, because this is an acknowledgement of the efforts, investments and good work of all our colleagues! The UN Global Compact Award shows that old time stereotypes about mining can be broken since our industry is not only a background, but also a driver for plenty of innovations and copper is a fundamental commodity for the development of green technologies of the future", Dimitar Tsotsorkov said. In his opinion, modern digital solutions allow businesses to manage their processes much more efficiently, reduce their carbon footprint and take a much better care of the environment, energy efficiency and resource management.
"We implement the most state-of-the-art integrated solutions, invest in innovations and make the best use of technological advances, but people remain our most important asset because they carry the charge of change and development," the Chairperson of the Supervisory Board of Asarel-Medet said. He pointed out that he accepted the award as an acknowledgement of his father`s vision, Prof. Dr. Lachezar Tsotsorkov, for the good work of the entire team and investment in new technologies. "The last two years have reminded us how invaluable words like peace and health are to us. It is most importantfor us now than ever to be united by shared values, share common causes, to be humane and compassionate to other people`s pain, to be wise and empathetic", Dimitar Tsotsorkov added and highlighted the social projects of Asarel Foundation and Lachezar Tsotsorkov Foundation and their contribution to society".
"Today, when we face a crisis after crisis, it is obvious that the business continues to be adaptable and flexible, create benefits, compensate for deficits," Ognyan Trayanov, Chairperson of the UN Global Compact Network Bulgaria said. "Business today is a pillar, a foothold of normality and a guarantee that the best efforts will be made to achieve development and sustainability," he said. The election of a representative of Bulgaria outlines the business assessment in our country as an important factor in achieving the sustainable development goals, the UN Global Compact Network Bulgaria stated. This is especially true in times of global crises, in which business does not abdicate, but proves with its actions what can be done to achieve change that will serve society as a whole", the Bulgarian organization said.

About the new technologies at Asarel-Medet
Digital transformation is one of the sustainable development priorities of Asarel-Medet and the mining company in Panagyurishte has state-of-the-art automated systems manufactured by world leading technology giants. Last year, the company took part in the X-Mine international research project which tested technologies considered the future of mining because they reduce the environmental footprint at the stage of geological exploration and ore sorting. In 2022, Asarel-Medet will be involved in a new international project that will study the critical raw materials for the green transition in Europe.Drones are not a novelty in mine planning for a long time and the company has the first in Bulgarian mining cyclic conveyor technologies for ore and waste haulage which reduce the carbon footprint. New technologies make it possible to monitor equipment in the mine and concentrator plant in real time from anywhere in the world and to optimize processes. Asarel has the first automated system in Bulgarian ore mining industry which controls the movement of the equipment units in the mine and even controls their tire pressure and oil temperature in their engines. An automated system also monitors the pit slope stability with two radars "scanning" the pit every three minutes within the nearest 0.2 mm. If any movement of earth masses over 4 mm per hour is detected, the machines send an e-mail warning to the specialists and this creates a brand new level of safety. A unique project on the Balkans can be seen at Asarel-Medet which integrates the drilling mining works together with a 3D geological, structural and hydrogeological model of the deposit into a common information system in order to ensure the most accurate mine planning and resource utilization. In 2021, the company developed an automated management system in the concentrator in partnership with Siemens - Bulgaria and this year it introduces a new expert system for optimizing ore grinding which is expected to reduce waste per unit of output product. The Siemens technology is also used for managing the closed-loop industrial water supply system and the three water treatment plants at the company. "Automated systems are revolutionizing our industry, greatly facilitating the work of our colleagues, improving occupational safety and environmental protection, but we do not perceive them as something that can replace humans," the Chairperson of the Supervisory Board of Asarel-Medet JSC Dimitar Tsotsorkov said regarding the award for digital transformation.
